GEOGRAPHY
Venezuela is located on the northeast coast of South America. It is bound by the Caribbean Sea to the north, Brazil to the south, Guyana to the east and Colombia to the southwest and west.
The country can be divided into four distinct geographical regions:
(1.) The Andes and adjacent hill country in the northwest.
(2.) The north coastal zone of the mountains bordering the Caribbean Sea and Lake Maracaibo, which is the largest lake in South America.
Northeastern Venezuela, popularly referred to as "El Oriente", is best known for its beaches, but inland to the south, in central Anzoategui state, you will pass over the Orinoco Belt, one of the world's largest petroleum reserves.
(3.) The plains or Llanos which extend south and east from the mountains to the Orinoco River.
(4.) The Guyana Highlands which is a vast area of high plateaux and plains that runs south and east of the Orinoco River. This region also contains the world's highest waterfall, the Angel Falls.
The Guyana region, in the far south, comprises some 45 percent of the national territory (including Delta Amacuro, Bolivar and Amazonas states). Here are some of the country's most challenging landscapes.
Standing proud on the golden savanna of the Gran Sabana are the ancient "tepuy" mesas of the Guyana Shield, which inspired Conan Doyle's Lost World.
To the east is the vast Orinoco Delta, home of the Warao peoples; and in the remote south are the virgin jungles of Amazonas state, sparsely populated by indigenous people whose lives have changed little since the Stone Age.
