BY THE SEA
Visitors in
Isla Margarita have a great variety of choices of things to do since there are activities for everyone and for all tastes.
Isla Margarita has around 93 kilometers of beautiful beaches. These beaches offer the visitor many amenities. Local restaurants give everyone the opportunity to sample the wonderful island cuisine and other international dishes. If you favor fish, don't miss the experience of trying out fresh fried fish eaten at the colorful small restaurants by the ocean.
There are also small outdoor shops, places where you can rent beach chairs or enjoy a relaxing massage right on the beach, as well as sports facilities, such as
scubadiving, and
parasailing or
horsebackriding (
Playa El Agua and
Playa Parguito-Eastern part of
Isla Margarita).
The Macanao Peninsula to the west is dotted with quiet, secluded beaches for peace and relaxation.
You can choose to go
golfing in Porlamar, or as mentioned earlier,
windsurfing and
kiteboarding at
El Yaque Beach. You can go horsebackriding at most beaches, but especially on the
Macanao Peninsula.
Scuba diving and
snorkeling are available in small but beautiful
Coche Island and
Los Frailes.
INLAND
Small villages like Tacarigua and Santa Ana or Pedro González in the countryside, are interesting places to visit to see colonial houses, buildings and churches, the town squares, local handicraft and folk art, or simply to experience village life in Isla Margarita. In some of the villages closer to the coast, you can actually see the fishermen's shipyards and even get the chance to help haul in the day's catch.
Porlamar is the largest city in the island. It is the economic and cultural center of Margarita. The economic advantage is created by the fact that Isla Margarita is a free trade zone that gives the national and international buyer a great advantage. Whiskey, cheese, chocolate, and electrical appliances, are among the goods that can be purchased less expensively than on the mainland.
Get ready for an exciting night life in Isla Margarita, mostly concentrated in the city of Porlamar. It consists of high-end restaurants, lounges, bars, cafés, casinos and many other possibilities. Playa El Agua is also an upbeat nightlife area to consider.
